In the latest edition of the Polish police magazine „Kwartalnik Policyjny” three articles were published written by our Defendo instructors:

  • major Tomasz Maczuga – Deputy Head, Department of Police Interventions at the Police Training Centre (Defendo Red/black belt instructor)
  • major Tomasz Borek – Chief of Intervention Tactics and Techniques at the Training Centre of the Military Police (Defendo Red/black belt instructor)
  • asp. Albert Piórkowski – shooting instructor, Police Training Centre (Hard Target instructor).

Defendo and Defendo Blue (prepared for uniformed services) are becoming more and more popular among uniformed services in Europe. Law Enforcement officers mainly appreciate the logical and internally consistent structure of our training programs, the simplicity of the techniques and the modern approach to teaching. Defendo has concrete solutions adapted to European conditions which law enforcement officers have to deal with.

Every article of the magazine has a short summary in English.

Summary in English:

1. Defendo.
"The police officer’s profession is ranked among high-risk professional groups. Police officers, as part of their service duties, are exposed to both verbal and physical aggression. In the course of their everyday service they repeatedly face the necessity to use coercive measures, they must also be prepared for defending against the physical attack.

Defendo, as the contemporary system of fighting, is based on the analysis of current threats, legal norms, the equipment and physical fitness of entrants (Reality Based Self Defense – RBSD). DEFENDO BLUE – specialist program for uniformed forces (Law Enforcement Officers – LEO) – includes ways of defending against most often appearing attacks in the course of intervention actions, techniques of incapacitating and controlling aggressive persons, using handcuffs, incapacitating gas, telescopic club and shooting techniques during fighting in the direct contact. Suggested tactical solutions refer to the actions of services during the protection of facilities, interventions in various places by police services, actions in conditions of the limited visibility. The ability of providing the first aid in different situations during interventions is the crucial element of the program.

The fact that the system was developed on the basis of the results of researches in physical culture, stress psychology, criminology is worth stressing. The scientific approach towards self-defence is widely used in it (scientific self-defence). One should rank among basic scientific facts the following: reaction time for the attack, Hick’s law, effect of the tunnel vision, OODA Loop."

2. An intervention against a person armed with a dangerous tool from the perspective of researches and experiences.
"The article presents the proposals of the direction and the way of teaching intervention and defensive techniques of officers of different uniformed services. It stresses the necessity of cooperation among different formations in standardization of tactics and basic techniques of actions to give the team consisting of different officers the chance to avoid the defeat in real threats against health or the life. The subject matter is discussed based on defensive behavioural observations both of people trained on the instructor level, as well as the ones without any experience and specialist skills. Aspects of the reaction to the direct threat, created by the person armed with a dangerous tool, are considered based on researches and registers from practical actions of officers. The above mentioned issues were discussed during the inter-departmental methodological-training workshops of the instructor staff in tactics and intervention techniques on “An intervention against the person armed with a dangerous tool from the perspective of researches and experiences”. It was organized in col. Stanislaw Sitko Military Gendarmerie Training Centre in Minsk Mazowiecki."

3. Physical safety of a police officer in the context of interventions with the use of firearms.
"One of the most important components, which one should pay attention to during conducting interventions, is a physical safety of police officers. The safety, in the general significance, is understood as the entirety of circumstances having or possibly having an influence on the realization of intervention actions without any exposure to danger of an involved police officer. However, in the context of interventions with the use of firearms, the safety is understood above all as the application of proper tactical actions, such as for example checking the area situated beyond the field of vision, mutual safeguard (placement in the safety triangle) or the use of covers. The present article is aimed at bringing closer the knowledge from the area of the application of instruments increasing the safety while taking interventions with the use of firearms."

asp. Albert Piórkowski
